The slim heel is a type of heel in some types of female shoes or boots. This type of heel has a long and thin shape that has been characterized as part of the clothing of the high society in the 17th century. The word heel is more relevant to the type of the heel than the height of the heel. Women who wear high heels of 6 inches give their feet an elongated shape and emphasize the lower leg. Unfortunately, the frequent wearing of this type of shoes can lead to many orthopedic problems.

The problems associated with the high heels.

High heels can cause back pain. The high shoes export the body forward leading to tension in the pelvis and the spine characterized by pain in the lower back (low back pain) known as lumbago.

The high-heeled shoes can cause arthritis of the knee.

Their use causes an unphysiologically alignment of the spine and the pelvis, tilts them forward, leading to increased tension in the knee joint, which in turn leads to early wear and tear of the joint surfaces with an end result in the development of osteoarthritis.

The excessive wearing of high heels can cause shortening of the muscles of the lower leg, inflammation of the Achilles tendon. This can happen when, after wearing high-heeled shoes we walk barefoot or wear flat-soled shoes or with a low heel.

The high shoes as an increased risk for development of neurinoma.

Neurinoma is located in the front of the lower leg as a result of the pressure exerted on the nerve of the abnormally tension that cause the high-heeled shoes. Its frequent pinching causes inflammation of the nerve, which can become a chronic condition and the only solution, is surgery.

The high shoes can lead to hammer-like toes (hammertoes).

When the foot is in a narrow shoe, the fingers are forced to constrict and cross to be able to find space. Over time, they may remain permanently in that position, become immobile and obtain hammertoes. This is a serious condition which can be eliminated only through surgery that takes the patient’s long absence from work and his everyday living.

The high heels can cause calluses.

A callus is the growth in the top layer of the skin due to excessive friction and tension. The pressing of the front part of the foot into a narrow shoe contributes to the development of calluses on the fingertips or between them.

The high-heeled shoes increase the likelihood of dislocation or fracture.

Since walking on high shoes is unstable, the probability of injury is very big. Walking on high heels over 9-11cm disrupts the balance and increases the probability of falling. The height of the heel you can use in everyday life is between 3 to 4 cm. This is the Ideal height which allows proper distribution and tension between the front and back of the leg, it does not load the foot and does not strain the Achilles tendon. The use of high heels over 6.5 cm tense the front of the foot equal to three times the body weight and their use for a long period of time can lead to the development of chronic problems that were mentioned earlier.

The use of high heels from time to time or for special occasions is not associated with the development of chronic foot problems.
